EN 12453 (EN 12453:2017 + A1:2021)
Industrial, commercial and garage doors and gates - Safety in use of motorised doors, Requirements and test methods
EN 12453 is the European technical reference standard for the safety in use of motorised doors, gates and doors for industrial and residential use. It is harmonised for the Machinery Directive and is the basis for risk assessment and limitation of impact and crushing forces.
Aim
Establish safety requirements and test methods to prevent:
- crushing, cutting, draw-in, entrapment;
- uncontrolled impacts on persons or things;
- unexpected behaviour in the event of faults or malfunctions.
Scope of Application
The standard applies to:
- Doors, motorised gates, garage doors, industrial doors, barriers, intended for use by people;
- Newly installed installations or subject to functional upgrading (extraordinary maintenance with substantial modification).
N.B. Automatic pedestrian doors, which fall under EN 16005, are excluded.
Main contents
Definition of allowed force limits according to type of use and point of contact;
- Obligation to use presence detection devices or active protection systems, regulated by EN 12978;
- Prescriptions for instrumental tests (e.g. with the BlueForce Smart force tester);
- Criteria for risk assessment and choice of protective measures (constructive, electronic, organisational).
