EN 12604 (EN 12604:2017+A1:2020)
Industrial, commercial and garage doors and gates - Mechanical aspects - Requirements and test methods
EN 12604 specifies the mechanical safety requirements and associated test methods for non-motorised or manually operated emergency doors, gates and doors intended for industrial, commercial, residential or garage installations.
Aim
Ensuring the mechanical safety of products during:
- installation,
- manual use,
- emergency operation (in case of motor failure),
- routine maintenance.
Scope of Application
- (Fully or partially) manual doors and gates;
- Components subject to movement (doors, rails, counterweights, springs, etc.);
- Includes: sliding, sectional, folding, rolling, hinged doors;
- Excludes motorised functions (EN 12453).
Main requirements:
- Mechanical stability under all operating conditions;
- Safe stopping of moving doors or panels;
- Energy containment (e.g. springs or counterweights);
- Protection from sharp edges, crushing, shearing and entrapment;
- Anti-fall devices in case of breakage (e.g. cables, springs, guides);
- Marking and user manual with safety instructions.
In practice, EN12604 is mandatory for CE conformity in combination with EN 13241 (product standard), and is also relevant for motorised gates when assessing safety in manual or emergency mode. The standard provides the mechanical basis for the design and verification of doors installed in residential and industrial contexts.
