EN 12978 Motorised doors and gates - Safety devices, Requirements and test methods

EN 12978 defines the technical requirements and test methods for electrical safety devices used on motorised doors, gates and barriers, as set out in the general safety standards in use (EN 12453, EN 16005)

Aim

Ensure that active protective devices meet minimum standards of reliability, response, durability and compatibility with the installation environment, such as:

  • photoelectric barriers,
  • capacitive or radar sensors,
  • sensitive edges,
  • magnetic or mechanical contacts.

Scope of Application

  • It applies to all electrical safety devices complementary to mechanical protection, installed on industrial and commercial doors, gates and garages.
  • Includes both newly manufactured components as well as replacements in renewals.

Main contents

  • Design and construction criteria for devices (impact resistance, fault signalling, self-testing);
  • Functional safety requirements in the presence of people (reliable detection, redundancy, fail-safe);
  • Mandatory tests for reaction, environmental compatibility and interaction with the control system;
  • Compatibility with risk assessment according to EN 12453 and EN 16005.
