EN 13854 - Safety of machinery - Minimum gaps to avoid crushing of parts of the human body

EN 13854 establishes minimum distance values between moving and fixed surfaces or between two moving surfaces to avoid the risk of crushing parts of the body (head, chest, arms, hands, etc.) during operation of machines.

Aim

Provide reliable minimum dimensions for the safe design of:

  • industrial machines;
  • motorised doors (e.g. sliding or swing gates);
  • mechanical systems with closely moving parts.

Main contents

Reference values depending on the part of the body potentially exposed and the type of dangerous movement. The standard also provides an objective criterion to be applied at the risk assessment stage (as provided by EN 12100).
