EN 13857 - Safety of machinery - Safety distances to prevent hazardous areas being reached by upper and lower limbs


EN 13857 defines minimum safety distances to prevent a person from reaching dangerous areas with hands, arms or legs, through or around physical barriers, gratings, guards or protections


Aim

Avoid unintentional or intentional access to hazardous elements through:
 
  • design of fixed or mobile barriers;
  • correct height and distance of guards from the point of danger;
  • protection based on anthropometric statistics (standard body dimensions).
   

Scope of Application

Applicable to:
 
  • fixed or mobile machines;
  • gates, doors and automated systems;
  • assessment of conformity with the safety requirements of the Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC or Reg. 2023/1230).
