EN 17352:2012 - Power operated pedestrian entrance control equipment - Safety in use - Requirements and test methods
UNI EN 17352 is the European technical reference standard for the safety in use of motorised pedestrian access control devices, such as turnstiles, swing gates and sliding leaf gates, operated electromechanically or electrohydraulically.
It is a harmonised standard under the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and applies to products used for the controlled passage of persons, including in escape routes and emergency exits.
Aim
Establish safety requirements and test methods to prevent:
- crushing, shearing, drawing-in;
- impacts, entrapment, accidental imprisonment;
- dangers from energy sources or functional faults;
- risks arising from instability, improper maintenance, sharp surfaces.
Scope of Application
The standard applies to:
- Turnstiles, swing gates and motorised sliding gates for pedestrian access control, intended for controlled individual use (e.g. badges, tickets, biometrics);
- Equipment used for ordinary access and in escape routes or emergency exits;
- All stages of the equipment life cycle: transport, installation, use, dismantling.
It does not apply to:
- Automatic pedestrian doors (see EN 16005, EN 16361);
- Interior/exterior doors (EN 14351-1 and -2);
- Mechanical turnstiles with electric/electronic release;
- Vertically moving or industrial process systems;
- Equipment for people with disabilities or for children under 8 years of age;
- Platform doors for subways and railways.;
Main contents
- Identification and management of significant hazards (Clause 4), with a focus on prevention of hazardous contacts;
- Force limitation obligation and safety distances according to EN ISO 13857 and Appendix C;
- Use of electro-sensitive protective equipment (ESPE) in accordance with EN 12978;
- Specific requirements for use in escape routes and emergency exits (Appendix A);
- Requirements for materials (e.g. safety glass EN 12150-2 and EN 14449);
- Functional safety verification according to EN ISO 13849-1 (PL c, cat. 2);
- Requirements for marking, manuals and maintenance (Appendices E and F)
