Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC

The directive defines the rules for designing, manufacturing and marketing safe machinery in the European Union, introducing requirements for CE marking, technical documentation and user manuals.


N.B: In April 2023, the European Parliament approved the publication of the new Machinery Regulation that will replace the current Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC by 2027

Main Aims

Harmonise health and safety requirements for the design and construction of machinery in the EU.
 
Ensure the free movement of machinery in the European market by removing technical barriers between Member States.
 
Protect the health and safety of workers and users.

Scope of Application

Partly completed machinery (intended to be incorporated into more complex machines).
 
Interchangeable accessories, safety components, lifting equipment, chains, ropes, belts, removable mechanical transmission devices.

Essential safety requirements (ESR - Annex 1)

  • Safe design and construction.
  • Ergonomics.
  • Protective equipment and safety devices.
  • Mechanical, electrical, noise, vibration, radiation and hazardous substance risks.
  • Shutdown, emergency and maintenance procedures.
       

Manufacturer's obligations

  • Ensure compliance with (RES)
  • Prepare the technical file.
  • Provide the EC declaration of conformity.
  • Affix the CE marking to the machine.
  • Draw up the instruction manual in the official language of the country of use.
