Directive 2014/53/EU - Radio Equipment (RED)
Directive 2014/53/EU (RED - Radio Equipment Directive) applies to all equipment that emits or receives radio waves, directly or indirectly, for communication or radiolocation purposes.
Aim
The directive sets out the essential requirements for radio equipment:
- do not cause harmful interference to other equipment or networks;
- ensure an adequate level of immunity to interference;
- comply with electrical safety and public health requirements (exposure to electromagnetic waves);
- efficiently use the radioelectric spectrum.
Scope of Application
Within the scope of RED fall:
- Integrated radio modules (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ZigBee)
- Remote controls, receivers, transmitters
- IoT devices, routers, modems, RFID devices
- Wireless control systems for gates and automatic doors
The RED Directive replaced the former R&TTE Directive 1999/5/EC.
